Fixing What’s Wrong With Drug Education

A recent survey conducted by Join Together a program of the Boston University School of Public Health shows that few teachers believe that alcohol and other drug prevention programs work. Only 2 percent of more than 3,700 respondents felt that their school-based prevention program is effective. The report says that teachers are skeptical of the prevention programs they deliver. It goes on to say that teachers cite the need more relevant study materials, more time to do prevention, more support, and more training.

Although more training and enhanced study materials would certainly do no harm, how does this change the current destructive belief permeating our schools and our culture that drug prevention doesnt work? It is not a matter of more time, more study materials, or more training, but a need for a fundamental change in how we define prevention, set prevention goals, and understand how children adopt and reinforce healthy and unhealthy behaviors.

For three decades the United States has been waging an expensive and ineffective drug war a war more political than practical. In 1993 the federal government spent $1.7 billion on the drug war and in 1999 17.9 billion. The most ubiquitous of drug education programs DARE (Drug Awareness Resistance Education) which was started in Los Angeles in 1983 is plagued by research showing its lack of effectiveness. DARE currently costs taxpayers between 1 and 1.3 billion dollars a year. In addition, the DARE programs premise that early drug education inoculates kids from future drug use in high school is both nave and lacking a fundamental understanding of child development. In the most recent survey of adolescent drug trends conducted by Monitoring the Future, 48% of 12th graders had a drink within the last thirty days and by the time a student graduates from high school nearly half have tried an illicit drug – most likely marijuana. While recent trends in drinking and drug use show decreases in most categories, underage drinking and most notably marijuana use remain a regular experience of teenage life. What have we gotten for our money? And how does the current drug education approach reflect the reality that most teenagers face every weekend?

Teenage drug use is normalized in our culture. By the time most teens reach high school, they accept alcohol and some drug use by their peers as a common social activity. The popular notion that drinkers and drug users are outcasts and deviants conveniently ignores the reality that many teens drink including student leadership, athletes, active and involved good students. Scare tactics and exaggerated drug effects only work when your audience does not have access to other information. This generation of students has more access to information than any other generation in time. This will most likely be the case for subsequent generations. Manipulation, coercion, and exaggerated claims are not tolerated by students.

Prevention programs need to support and validate those students who choose to delay their drinking and abstain from other drugs. Programs need to help students effectively communicate concerns to friends who may be experiencing problems with their drinking and drug use and to connect those friends to helping resources in the community. Finally, prevention programs need to offer suggestions to students to minimize the risks associated with drinking and drug use such as frequency and quantity of use. Promoting risk reduction strategies no more condones drinking than the suggestion of wearing a seat belt condones speeding.

We are in a crisis right now. It is not a drug crisis, but a crisis of belief and faith. We are loosing faith in the idea that we can be effective. We are giving in to the fear that any deviation from the path of abstinence-based zero tolerance education is an endorsement of drinking. The results of giving in to fear are the growing popularity of random drug testing programs, locker searches and drug sniffing dogs. We dont need to catch more kids, but to connect with more kids. We dont need to make an example of a student, but be examples for students of healthy living and compassionate care.

Reasons Why Education Is A Wise Investment

While different people will have different opinions about “education” and its value, I don`t know anyone who wouldn`t agree that “learning more” is better than “knowing less”.

Education, as I define it for this article, includes school, seminars, workshops and all manner of formal approaches; as well as coaching, mentoring, apprenticeships, focused reading, online learning, planned experiences and more. As you read this article I urge you to think broadly and expansively about your definition of education.

Regardless of how you feel about “formal” education, and regardless of many examples we could cite of people with PhD`s who have underachieved or sixth grade dropouts who achieved at the highest levels, it is hard to argue with the premise in the title that education is a wise investment.

So, you could ask, why write this article if I feel like everyone agrees with the basic premise?

Two reasons: I want to expand your thinking about what education and learning means, and I want to convince/remind you that this isn`t an argument about “others,” the young or out of work for instance, but that it is about every one of us.

So please read the rest of this article, and the questions at the end, with one eye on the words and one eye looking in the mirror.

In other words, I`m writing to you.

As you look at any investment in any situation, you must examine what you will gain compared to what it will cost.

When you compare those things you can determine the return on your investment. Your costs in this calculation are time, energy, focus and, yes, money. Consider those and compare them to the returns described below.

The Seven Reasons
Increase your self confidence. When you are learning new things, new horizons are opening up in your mind. You feel better about yourself and your ability to achieve. After all, if you can learn one thing, you can learn more! True genuine self confidence is something that we all can use more of; investing in your education and learning will add to your storehouse of self confidence.

Reach your goals. There is a learning component within every goal, large or small. As you learn more in the focused areas related to our goals and aspirations, you are able to move towards achieving them more rapidly. Investing in education in support of your goals is one of the best things you can do to increase the likelihood that you will reach – and even exceed – them.

Have more fun. When you are reaching your goals and feeling more confident don`t you think you are going to have more fun? You can invest in learning anything! Want to learn how to knit or ballroom dance or judge wines? Whatever your passion, learning opens up new opportunities to enjoy them even more.

Improve your attitude. Human beings are – by design – learning beings. When we are doing the things that make us most human (including learning) we naturally are more upbeat and positive. When you are learning things that help move you towards your goals, will you likely be more positive and optimistic? You bet!

Increase your momentum. Momentum is a powerful thing. As the rock rolls down the hill and picks up speed, it becomes more powerful and able to overcome the obstacles in its way much easier. So it is for people too. Learn something, improve your confidence; learn something more and have a more positive attitude; learn something new and you thirst for more. As you continue to learn your learning momentum grows, as does the momentum of your success. A perfect reason to never stop learning!

Increase your earning power. One of the most reliable related factors to financial success is a person`s willingness to learn, and willingness to invest in learning. Notice I didn`t say the correlation is to formal education or degrees, but rather the desire, motivation and practice of continual learning. There is a reason the people with bigger net worths have bigger libraries. . .

Reach your potential. Deep inside all of us (especially as our self confidence becomes healthier) is a desire to move closer and closer to our potential – to becoming the person we were meant to be. No other single action will tip the scales towards you reaching your potential more than continuing to invest in yourself as a learner.

To be sure, these seven reasons are inter-related; as you realize one, you are likely recognizing others – maybe all of them – simultaneously.

It`s like putting hot fudge on top of homemade ice cream – it`s hard to get too much of the good stuff of learning (and life)!

And now, the closing questions I promised.

Education and knowledge enables individual to put his potential to best use. Education is commonly referred to as the process of learning and obtaining knowledge at school, in a form of formal education. Education is the tool which grants us the required propel in moving ahead and doing something productive in our upcoming future. It is an important aspect that facilitate in fetching about different modification to ourselves as a human beings, as an active member of society and also a responsible citizen of a country. We can conclude that education makes a man ideal and qualified.

But from where does a man get educated. The basic education initiate when child start going to school. However, the procedure of edification does not only start when a child first attends school. Education actually begins at home. A person does not gain understanding only from a teacher; he can get it from parent, family members and even by self grasping. Basically the first school of a child is his/her home and first teacher is his/her mother. It is a holistic process and persists throughout the life.

Even the usual happenings and proceedings about us teach us, in a way or other. It would not be an embellishment to say that the survival of human beings is wasted without knowledge and education. A knowledgeable person has the aptitude to transform the world, as he/she is overflowing with self-confidence and is certain of making the precise moves.

Societies of today have made the process of education and school going a must to do thing, which is really a very welcome step in the promotion of education.
Without knowledge, the training of the human minds is incomplete. Education becomes constructive only when people use his mental moral and physical power in a constructive way, if one wants to achieve success.
